Tailings Sludge Filter Press Product Introduction and Selection Guide

2026-05-29 09:13:55

The tailings sludge filter press is the core special equipment for solid-liquid separation of beneficiation tailings slurry in the mine processing procedure. This tailings sludge filter press performs high-pressure dewatering on high-moisture tailings slurry to convert it into low-moisture dry filter cakes. It thoroughly solves common problems such as tailings slurry accumulation, loss and environmental non-compliance, and realizes four core values: tailings dry discharge, dry stacking, production water resource recovery, and tailings solid waste resource utilization. As key equipment for mines, it supports environmentally friendly production, energy saving and consumption reduction, and solid waste recycling.

We specialize in the field of tailings dewatering equipment and boast a complete product system of membrane filter presses. Our product lineup includes three standard models: standard membrane filter press, cloth walking membrane filter press and high-beam membrane filter press, as well as mobile dewatering solutions including skid-mounted and vehicle-mounted filter presses. All units are equipped with a standard PLC automatic control system for unattended operation, fully adapting to diverse mine tailings, different processing capacities and varied dewatering standard requirements. Professional tailings filtration and separation performance ensures stable and efficient production for various mining projects.

Working Principle and Complete Process Flow

The dewatering process of the tailings sludge filter press adopts a standardized closed-loop procedure: concentration pretreatment → high-pressure filter dewatering → filtrate recycling → filter cake resource utilization. The whole process operates automatically with stable dewatering effect and high water resource utilization efficiency. The detailed process is as follows:

1. Concentration Pretreatment

The raw tailings slurry features a low solid content of only 10%~20%, which is not suitable for direct filter dewatering. The tailings slurry is first delivered to a high-efficiency thickener for preliminary solid-liquid separation via gravity sedimentation. The solid content of the underflow tailings slurry is increased to 55%~70%, meeting the feeding standard for subsequent tailings filter press operation. The clear overflow water separated by the thickener can be directly returned to the beneficiation production line for recycling, realizing preliminary water resource recovery.

2. High-pressure Filter Dewatering

The concentrated high-density tailings slurry is pumped into the filter chamber of the tailings filter press. Solid-liquid separation is achieved through physical high-pressure extrusion: liquid penetrates the filter cloth and is discharged, while solid particles are intercepted by the filter cloth to form dense filter cakes in the filter chamber. Different models adopt differentiated pressurized dewatering methods to adapt to various tailings working conditions:

  • Chamber/Membrane Filter Press: Preliminary dewatering is completed through the feed pump pressure of 0.6~1.5 MPa. The membrane filter press further injects high-pressure water or compressed air to implement ultra-high pressure squeezing at 2.0~4.0 MPa, which deeply removes capillary water inside the filter cake and delivers superior dewatering performance.
  • Belt Filter Press: It adopts a dual-belt clamping continuous dewatering process. The slurry undergoes gravity dewatering, wedge pre-pressing and multi-stage roller high-pressure squeezing to produce dry filter cakes continuously and stably, ideal for large-scale and continuous production scenarios.

3. Filtrate Recycling

The filtrate generated during the filtering process is clear with suspended solids content stably lower than 100 mg/L, free of impurities and pollution. The collected filtrate flows back to the beneficiation system for reuse. The water resource recovery rate of the whole process exceeds 90%, which effectively reduces mine production water costs and meets environmental protection and water-saving standards.

4. Filter Cake Disposal and Resource Utilization

After dewatering by the tailings sludge filter press, the moisture content of tailings filter cakes can be stably reduced to 15%~25%. In particular, the membrane filter press can steadily control the moisture content below 20%, fully complying with environmental standards for mine tailings dry stacking. The dewatered dry filter cakes have no water seepage or loss. They can be safely stacked dry or used for goaf backfilling, and further recycled as resources for brick making, road construction and cement auxiliary materials, turning waste into treasure and improving the economic benefits of mines.

Core Equipment Selection Guidelines

The selection of a tailings sludge filter press requires comprehensive evaluation of material characteristics, production capacity, dewatering standards and operation & maintenance requirements. Accurate selection balances dewatering effect, production efficiency and equipment investment cost. The core selection criteria are as follows:

1. Material Characteristics (Core Basis)

The particle size, mud content, viscosity and pH value of different tailings directly determine the dewatering difficulty and applicable equipment. Particle size analysis, sedimentation tests, viscosity and pH detection are required before selection:

  • High mud content and ultra-fine particle tailings (large proportion of -400 mesh particles): The membrane filter press is the most mature and reliable choice with stable dewatering performance for difficult-to-dewater fine tailings.
  • Coarse particle tailings with low requirements for filter cake moisture content: The belt filter press is applicable for continuous and high-efficiency dewatering.
  • Medium particle tailings with conventional dry stacking standards and cost-control demands: The chamber filter press offers higher cost performance.

2. Production Processing Capacity

Calculate the required filtering area based on the daily and annual output of dry tailings to match the equipment model and quantity. Small and medium-sized mines can adopt a single standard model to meet production demands. For large-scale mines with a daily tailings processing capacity of over 10,000 tons, multiple large membrane filter presses can be operated in parallel or matched with large belt filter presses to ensure stable productivity and continuous production.

3. Target Filter Cake Moisture Content

  • Conventional tailings dry stacking: A filter cake moisture content below 25% meets the standard, which can be achieved by chamber, belt and membrane filter presses.
  • Tailings resource utilization (brick making, building materials) and dry discharge in cold winter regions: A filter cake moisture content below 20% is required. Only the tailings sludge filter presswith membrane structure can stably meet this ultra-low moisture standard, while chamber filter presses cannot achieve stable compliance.

4. Automation and Maintenance Requirements

All our filter presses are standard equipped with PLC touch screen control system, automatic plate pulling, automatic filter cloth cleaning, fault alarm and other basic functions, realizing fully automatic operation and minimizing manual intervention. For large-scale and intelligent mines, upgraded models with remote monitoring interface and intelligent maintenance reminders are available to facilitate real-time equipment management and regular maintenance, reducing equipment failure rate and operation & maintenance costs.

Frequently Asked Questions

1.What is a tailings sludge filter press?

It is a massive, automated filter press used in the mining industry to remove water from leftover mineral waste (tailings) after the valuable metals have been extracted.

2.What is tailings filtration?

Tailings filtration is the mechanical process of pressing the water out of mining waste to create dry, stackable dirt, rather than pumping wet sludge into a liquid dam.

3.Why use a tailings filter press?

It eliminates the risk of catastrophic tailings dam failures, complies with strict environmental regulations, and recovers millions of gallons of water for the mine to reuse.

4.How dry do tailings get after pressing?

Depending on the mineral, a tailings sludge filter press can reduce the moisture content of the waste cake to between 10% and 20%.

5.What is dry stack tailings?

It is the method of storing filtered, dry tailings cakes in compacted mounds or backfilling them into the mine, rather than storing liquid waste in ponds.
